February 15th, 2023

The closure of JCUBE, a popular mall located in the Jurong East region of Singapore, is set to take place in August 2023 and the announcement has brought about a flurry of activity as the development arm of CapitaLand Group prepares to redevelop the site into a 40-storey residential and commercial development known as JCube Residence. With the impending closure of the mall, CapitaLand Development (CLD) is doing its part to ensure that the mall’s tenants and staff are supported during this transition.

The closure of JCube marks the end of an era and the impending transition to JCube Residence brings with it many challenges, particularly for the retail staff who work there. In order to ensure that these individuals are adequately supported, CLD has announced that it will be providing them with financial and employment support.

CLD has pledged to provide financial support to the retail staff of JCube through their “Retail Staff Support Programme”. This programme will provide a one-time financial support of up to S$3,000 for affected retail staff. CLD has also committed to supporting displaced retail staff with job placements and training opportunities. The programme is designed to help retail staff find new jobs as well as providing them with the skills and training needed to succeed in the new roles.

In addition to the financial and employment support, CLD is also working with the local community to ensure that the mall’s closure is managed in a responsible and considerate manner. To this end, CLD has set up a “JCube Community Support Programme” to ensure that the mall’s closure does not disadvantage neighbouring businesses or the local community. The programme will provide financial support to local businesses as well as providing emotional and psychological support to those affected by the closure.

The closure of JCube marks the end of an era and the transition to JCube Residence is an exciting development for the region. The 40-storey residential and commercial development is set to launch in the second half of 2023 and it is expected to have an average selling price of S$2,100 psf and upwards. The development is expected to provide much needed residential housing in the vicinity as well as boosting home prices in the resale market.

The closure of JCube and the redevelopment of the site into JCube Residence is an exciting development for the region and it is encouraging to see the local developer taking steps to ensure that those affected by the closure are supported during this transition. The financial and employment support offered by CLD is a welcome gesture and it is a testament to their commitment to responsible development. The JCube Community Support Programme further demonstrates CLD’s commitment to the local community and it is encouraging to see that the developer is taking steps to ensure that the mall’s closure does not disadvantage neighbouring businesses or the local community.

Singapore’s popular entertainment hub, JCUBE, located in the Jurong East region, will be closing its doors in August 2023 to make way for a 40-storey residential and commercial development, JCube Residence. As the mall’s last day of operations approaches, its developer, CapitaLand Development (CLD), has announced plans to provide support to the mall’s displaced tenants and retail staff.

The impending closure of JCUBE comes after CLD obtained provisional permission from Singapore’s Urban Redevelopment Authority to redevelop the JCube site. The JCube Residence development will feature commercial space on the first and second storeys, with residential units set to launch for sale in the second half of 2023. It is expected to be completed in 2027.

CLD has noted that the redevelopment of JCube for JCube Residence will complement the Singapore government’s plans to bring new homes, along with new businesses, recreational facilities and amenities to the Jurong Lake District (JLD). This includes a 6.8-hectare mega white site on the confirmed list of the first half of the 2023 government land sales programme, which will bring 375,000 square metres (sq m) in gross floor area (GFA) and 1,760 private homes.

The closure of JCUBE, however, will displace JCube Condo its existing tenants and staff, who have been part of the mall’s ecosystem for more than a decade. In response to the displacement, CLD has announced several initiatives to support the affected tenants and staff.

The developer has stated that it is working closely with JCUBE’s tenants to ensure a smooth handover of the premises and provide them with the necessary support. It has also set aside a dedicated team to help tenants with their relocation, as well as to provide advice and assistance on the new premises and services offered by the JCube Residence development.

For JCUBE’s retail staff, CLD is working with the respective tenants to ensure that the staff are offered employment opportunities at the tenants’ new locations. The developer is also providing resources and support to the staff who may need to look for new employment opportunities.

To further support the displaced staff, CLD has also partnered with various human-resource-related firms to provide free career coaching and job-matching services. This will ensure that the staff are well-equipped to make successful transitions to their new roles.

The closure of JCUBE is an unfortunate event, but CLD’s initiatives demonstrate its commitment to the mall’s tenants and staff. In addition to providing relocation support, the developer is also offering much-needed resources to help the displaced staff make successful transitions to their new roles.

With its initiatives, CLD is showing its commitment to creating a vibrant and sustainable future for the Jurong Lake District. The JCube Residence development, which will bring new homes, businesses, recreational facilities and amenities to the area, will help to alleviate pent-up demand for housing in Jurong. The potential new launches, including JCube Residence, will also boost home prices in the resale market and likely have a spillover effect on the Bukit Batok and Clementi areas near the JCube Residence development.
