End of an Era: JCube Mall Staff Reflect on Memories of Iconic Jurong East Landmark Slated for Demolition in 2027 Condo Development

February 15th, 2023

The iconic JCube mall in Jurong East, Singapore, has been a staple of the community for the past decade. From its distinctive glass facade to its vast selection of leisure and edutainment activities, it has been a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike. But the mall’s days are numbered, as it is set to close its doors in August to make way for a 40-storey residential and commercial development known as JCube Residence.

For the staff of JCube, the news of its closure has been bittersweet. As the mall prepares to make way for the new development, its employees have been reflecting on their time spent at the iconic mall.

“It’s been a great experience working here,” said Chen Chia Chia, a customer service representative at JCube. “I’ve met so many wonderful people and made lots of friends. I’ve also had the opportunity to learn so much about the retail and leisure industry.”

“It’s a bit sad that we’re closing down,” said Sheryl Tan, a cashier at JCube. “I’ve been here for five years and it feels like home. I’ll miss the people I’ve worked with and the customers I’ve served.”

For some, the closure of JCube brings with it the end of an era. “It’s been a great place to work,” said Tan. “It’s been a great place to learn and grow. I’m going to miss it.”

While the closure of JCube marks the end of an era, it also marks the beginning of a new era. The new JCube Residence development is set to bring new homes, along with new businesses, recreational facilities and amenities to the Jurong Lake District.

The new JCube Residence development is expected to launch for sale in the second half of 2023. It is expected to have an average selling price of S$2,100 per square foot, and will be connected to Jurong East MRT interchange, Westgate and IMM Building via J-Walk, a covered elevated pedestrian network.

The potential new launches, including JCube Residence, will help to alleviate pent-up demand for housing in Jurong, as there have been a lack of new condo launches in recent years. Property analysts believe that residential homes in Jurong Lake District may be attractive in the long term, as regions zoned for infrastructural growth and substantial transformational works tend to see faster capital appreciation.

For the staff of JCube, the closure of the mall marks a bittersweet moment. They have been reflecting on their time spent at the iconic mall and the people they have met along the way. But they are also looking forward to the future and the potential of the new JCube Residence development.

“It’s been a great experience working here,” said Chen. “I’m looking forward to the new development and the opportunities it will bring.”

“It’s a bit sad that we’re closing down,” said Tan. “But I’m also excited for the future and what’s to come.”

The closure of JCube marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new era. The potential new launches, including JCube Residence, will help to alleviate pent-up demand for housing in Jurong and boost home prices in the resale market. Property analysts are expecting the new JCube Residence to have an average selling price of S$2,100 psf and upwards, aligned with recent launch prices of the outside of central region developments.

For the staff of JCube, the closure of the mall marks a bittersweet moment. But they are also looking forward to the future and the potential of the new JCube Residence development. As the mall prepares to make way for the new development, its employees have been reflecting on their time spent at the iconic mall and the people they have met along the way. The future may be uncertain, but they are hopeful that the new JCube Residence development will bring new opportunities and possibilities to the Jurong Lake District.

The closure of JCube, a landmark leisure and edutainment mall located in the Jurong East region of JCube Condo Singapore, in August 2021 will mark the end of an era. After a decade of providing entertainment and edutainment to the public, the mall is set to make way for a 40-storey residential and commercial development, JCube Residence.

The redevelopment of JCube into JCube Residence will add to the anticipation of potential residential launches in the vicinity, including a 6.8-hectare mega white site on the confirmed list of the first half of the 2023 government land sales program. JCube Residence will be connected to Jurong East MRT interchange, Westgate and IMM Building via J-Walk, a covered elevated pedestrian network in the Jurong Lake District (JLD). Eventually, it will be linked to the upcoming Jurong East Integrated Transport Hub, which boasts a bus interchange, public library, community club and sports centre, among other amenities near to JCube Residence.

Despite the closure of JCube, the memories of the iconic mall will live on in the hearts of its long-time staff, who have seen the mall through its 10-year journey.

“It has been a privilege working here at JCube because of the incredible people I’ve met and the experiences I’ve had,” said Anna, a former staff member at the mall. She has seen the mall blossom from its humble beginnings in 2011 to the vibrant mall it is today.

“The mall has always been a place of joy and energy with its many attractions such as the ice-skating rink, cinema, and restaurants,” she said. “I’ve had so many great memories at JCube and I’ll miss the mall and its atmosphere a lot.”

The mall’s last day of operations is August 6.

“It’s really sad to see the mall go,” said another former staff member, Rachel. “It’s a place where I’ve made so many friends and created so many beautiful memories.”

Rachel said that she had seen the mall’s popularity grow over the years, especially since the opening of Don Don Donki, Haidilao, and Daiso. “The mall was always bustling with people, which made working here really enjoyable.”

JCube’s closure also marks the end of an era for the many tenants at the mall.

“We’ve been here since the mall opened in 2011, and it’s been great to be a part of the JCube family,” said a representative from a tenant store at the mall. “We’ve had a great 10 years, and we’ll miss the mall and its friendly atmosphere.”

The closure of JCube has also brought about an outpouring of nostalgia from the public.

“I’ve been coming to the mall since it opened, and it’s always been a great place to hang out with friends and family,” said one regular visitor to the mall. “It’s really sad to see it go, but I’m sure the new development will be just as great.”

The closure of JCube marks the end of an era, but the memories of the iconic mall will live on in the hearts of its long-time staff and the public. While the mall may be gone, the potential launches of new residential developments in the region, including JCube Residence, will likely give the Jurong East region a new lease of life.
