Jurong Lake District Development to Bring 100,000 Jobs and 20,000 Homes, Singapore’s Largest Business District
Jurong Lake District (JLD), Singapore’s largest business district, is set to bring in 100,000 jobs and 20,000 homes for Singaporeans. The 360-hectare district, located in the heart of the West, will be a vibrant and bustling hub for business and entertainment, offering quality offices, housing, amenities and abundant green spaces.
The development of JLD is part of the government’s plans to transform the West into an industrial and commercial powerhouse, with the aim to create a more liveable and vibrant environment for residents and businesses. By 2035, JLD will be served by four MRT lines, offering enhanced accessibility to the rest of the island, including direct connections to the CBD, Changi Airport and Jurong Innovation District (JID).
JLD is expected to create up to 100,000 jobs in areas such as finance, business services, retail, hospitality, technology and clean energy. With JLD’s close proximity to the port, businesses in the district will benefit from faster production-to-market turnarounds, creating even more job opportunities. The district will also offer an estimated 20,000 residential units, catering to Singaporeans of different ages and interests.
To ensure a pleasant working and living environment, JLD will be developed with sustainability and innovation in mind. The district will be a test-bed for urban solutions and infrastructure, such as the Jurong Canal Drive Extension, a transit-only corridor with widened footpaths and bike lanes, connecting Tengah and JLD. The existing J-Walk network will also be extended to more developments, offering pedestrians shelter come rain or shine.
Besides providing a conducive environment for businesses and residents, JLD will also offer a variety of recreational and leisure activities. Residents and visitors can look forward to a new 11-kilometre-long sky corridor that allows pedestrians, cyclists and autonomous shuttles to move seamlessly within the precinct. A complementary leisure and recreational cluster has also been JCube Condo planned around Jurong Lake, leveraging on the area’s unique lakeside and garden setting.
JLD is also home to Jurong Lake Gardens, Singapore’s first national gardens in the heartlands, bringing nature closer to homes. With the opening of Lakeside Gardens in April 2019, residents and visitors can enjoy nature-themed and water play areas, lifestyle and sports facilities, as well as a restored swamp forest and wetlands. The rest of Jurong Lake Gardens will open progressively from 2021 onwards and the new Science Centre next to Chinese Garden MRT station is slated to be ready around 2025.
The development of JLD is a significant milestone in Singapore’s industrial development. With the introduction of the Jurong Region Line and Cross Island Line, residents will have more commuting options, providing enhanced accessibility to key employment, recreation and leisure areas. By 2035, JLD will be home to 100,000 jobs, 20,000 homes and an array of recreational and leisure activities, allowing Singaporeans to work, live and play in one integrated district.
outside of the CBD
Jurong Lake District (JLD) is set to become Singapore’s largest business district outside of the Central Business District (CBD). The 360-hectare district is estimated to bring in approximately 100,000 jobs and 20,000 homes by 2035. This development signals a major shift in Singapore’s urban landscape as the nation strives to become a leading global city and a vibrant hub for innovation and business.
The JLD development, which is part of the Jurong Lake District Master Plan, will be divided into four distinct zones. The first zone is the Central Business District (CBD), which will feature offices and commercial developments, as well as a range of lifestyle and entertainment options. The second zone is the Lakeside Living area, which is designed to be a residential enclave with quality homes, lush green spaces and ample amenities. The third zone is the Tuas Port, which will be a major port development and the fourth zone is the Jurong Innovation District (JID), which is envisioned to be an industrial district for advanced manufacturing.
The development of JLD is expected to bring numerous benefits to Singapore. The district will be a major employment hub, creating new job opportunities for Singaporeans. It will also drive economic growth by providing businesses with a larger space for their operations. The development of the Tuas Port will also strengthen Singapore’s position as a maritime and logistics hub, giving the country a competitive edge in the global market.
In terms of infrastructure, the Jurong Lake District Master Plan outlines an extensive range of public transport options to facilitate commutes to and from the district. The Jurong Region Line (JRL) and Cross Island Line (CRL) will be extended to service the district, while existing MRT lines will also have direct connections to JLD. The district will also be served by six MRT lines by 2035.
The JLD will also feature a host of green initiatives to ensure that the district remains eco-friendly. The district will be designed to be pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly, with widened footpaths and bike lanes lined with shadier trees. The district will also incorporate sensitive urban design features to ensure a human-scale environment. The J-Walk network will be extended to more developments to provide pedestrians with shelter in inclement weather.
The development of JLD is part of the larger effort to transform the western region of Singapore into a vibrant and liveable space. The district is expected to bring new life to Jurong Lake Gardens, which will become Singapore’s first national gardens. The Lakeside Living area will also be a model for smart and sustainable living, with easy access to quality amenities and generous green spaces.
The Jurong Lake District Master Plan is a major step forward in Singapore’s vision of becoming a leading global city. The district promises to bring numerous economic and social benefits to the nation, while also serving as a model for smart and sustainable living. As the district takes shape in the coming years, Singaporeans can look forward to a bustling business district that is both liveable and vibrant.
